The sun is now higher in the sky and all of a sudden there are more hours of sun in a day. As soon as the sun rises higher than the Elbstab mountain, it shines four to five hours longer per day. Nevertheless, February is still a real winter month in which temperatures can fall far below zero. If there is a real winter storm, there can be up to one meter of fresh snow in a day. February is school holiday time in Switzerland and Europe. In the village and on the ski and toboggan slopes there is a lot of activity again. Children play in the snow and build snow castles and imaginative figures. On the ice field in Muerren there are various curling tournaments. The Gimmelwald Ski Club holds its ski race during this time, where both young and old take part. Of course, the post race get-together is an important part of the event.
