March

The march sun melts the snow very quickly. In higher regions the snow is now at its best, but in Gimmelwald spring is slowly coming. Its arrival is announced by the crocus and liverwort. Where the snow has already melted you suddenly see hundreds of thrushes pecking for worms. The ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) and fielfare (Turdus pilaris) are particularly common here. The end of March brings the first wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). Anyone who moves in the snow on sunny days in March must protect themselves from the sun. The sun's rays are already much stronger and the effect is magnified by the reflection of the snow. March is a time when it is warm enough to sit outside on the terrace and enjoy lunch at the mountain restaurants again. In general, there are less guests during the week. Due to the warmer temperatures and the longer and more intense sunshine, wet snow slides and avalanches are frequent and can be heard thundering down into the valley with a great roar. This spectacle can be watched safely from Gimmelwald, especially opposite the Schwarzmönch.
